ORIENTATION

May 2008 Orientation dates: 27th  - a 4 day Orientation.

June 2008 Orientation dates: 2nd, 9th - both 5 day orientations and 17th - a  4 day Orientation.

August 2008 Orientation date: starting either August 18th or 19th                  (to be confirmed)

Once we have received your application, prospective applicants will be asked to complete the Distance Learning Course. After this is received, approved applicants will be invited to attend one of the four or five day Intensive TEFL Introductory Courses (Orientation). The fee of the Orientation is 150 euros. Included in the fee are your 5 - 6 nights accommodation (prior to depature for camp), all meals and the TEFL introductory  course. A Introductory certificate will be sent out to you along with a reference at the end of the summer period.

As the name suggests the ‘Distance Learning Course’ is intended for you to complete at home. It has been constructed to ensure tutors have a full understanding of the position they are applying for and you have all the information you require to feel confident in working with Italian children.

The ACLE office is based in Sanremo, a bustling coastal town 30 minutes from France. You will meet other tutors from across the globe and prepare for the summer! Directly after Orientation you will be sent to your first Camp, either on Friday night or Saturday morning. Upon completion of your time with ACLE you will receive an Introductory TEFL certificate and reference. These wil be posted to you at the end of the summer season.

We will hold two or three separate Orientations throughout June and one in August.  Prospective tutors will have the chance to choose which week is best for them. Orientations are staggered as Camps commence at different times. If you are attending a four day orientation you must arrive in Sanremo before 8pm on the Monday of your Orientation week. If you are attending a five day orientation you must arrive in Sanremo before 8pm on the Sunday of your Orientation week. After the Orientation you will be sent directly to the Camp that you will be working at (please see the FAQ page for more information)

The topics you will be covering during this course are:
• The power of Threatre and Play in learning.
• How to speak to children while teaching. For example, the speaking speed (from slow to normal), intonation, pronunciation (difficult sounds like “h”, “th” and long vowels e.g. ship, sheep).
• Teaching materials for the Summer/City Camps, with particular attention to the most important grammatical structures.
• Lesson plans to balance your work equally amongst games, drama and the workbooks.
• An opportunity to learn and share various language games for children.
• How to utilise and mark the children’s workbooks.
• Key points such as repetition, drilling, and correcting children’s mistakes.
• A discussion on how to speak English with the children outside lesson time. The association of sound to object or action while keeping in mind the syllabus and the comprehension level of the students.
• Ideas and instructions for creating drama skits & sketches.
• How much Italian spoken by the children should be permitted.
• Possible scenarios that could arise concerning the children, the host families, Italian culture, etc.

It’s an intensive but fun four or five day course, with a high level of involvement and interaction for everyone! You’ll learn a plethora of ideas, make new friends and eat plenty of good food!

In the unlikely event that after your four/five-day course we consider you to be unsuitable to work at ACLE Camps (this is incredibly rare), you will not be liable to pay the course fee and no further commitment will exist on either part. We take no responsibility for any costs incurred as a result of travelling to Sanremo for the course.
