FAQ
Q: Do I have to be a trained actor?
A: No, but acting/drama skills are obviously advantageous. You must be enthusiastic, adaptable, young at heart, dedicated and love working with children.
Q: Do I have time off to sight-see?
A: You will receive a minimum of 6 full days off a month, however some days you will work for 2 hours, and others for 6 – some days you will need to drive to another destination and sometimes you will not. Each day is different. It is fine if you wish to visit locations of interest as long as it does not disrupt the tour.
Q: Do I have to be able to drive to apply?
A: No, but it’s always useful. If you drive and come from outside the EU, you’ll need to obtain an International license before leaving home.
Q: Do I need a work visa?
A: Yes, you will need one of the following:
EU passport
Italian work visa
Please note that ACLE is unable to offer assistance in obtaining visas.
Q: Explain TIE
A: TIE stands for Theatre in Education. Our philosophy surrounds the notion that children learn more when they are taught through a variety of mediums including drama, song and interactive activities. In this respect, children learn in a fun and memorable way.
Q: How do I apply?
A: Click here to begin the application process.
Q: How much money will I be paid?
A: Actors are paid €230 per week and returning/senior actors €260 per week, plus a bonus which you will receive at the end of your contract. Accommodation and transport is provided. During the rehearsal period in Sanremo actors receive €150.
Q: What age are most of the actors?
A: The minimum age for our actors is 18, and the bulk of our actors are aged between 22 and 30.
Q: What do the workshops consist of?
A: Workshops are held after the show – the actors split the groups of children into smaller groups and run 30-60 min long workshops which include games, songs and activities relating to the show.
Q: What else can I do with ACLE?
A: ACLE has a variety of projects on the go year round. We run Summer and City Camps from June to September and have a School Camp tour focusing on drama (Shakespeare or musicals) running from January to June. ACLE also looks for volunteers to work on the restoration of medieval houses in the mountain village of Baiardo.
Q: What happens in Sanremo for the rehearsal period?
A: The rehearsal period is around 10 days long and is based in Sanremo – a bustling coastal town near the French border. You will learn sketches, workshops ideas, games and activities to use with the children. At the rehearsal period in Sanremo you will be placed in your group of three. We have to ensure that the actors have compatible personalities and are able to bring different strengths and skills to the job. You will also be told whereabouts your tour will take place. We are unable to take requests of placements in particular locations.
Q: What is the accommodation situation like?
A: Accommodation will be in shared hotel rooms or in ACLE flats depending on where your tour takes place. You will almost always have to share a room with your colleagues.
Q: What type of shows/sketches will I be performing?
A: The hour long shows are either based entirely on one story (eg Wizard of Oz, Robin Hood, Excalibur) or consist of a combination of short humorous sketches suited to meet the English level of the audience. The children are aged between six and 16, however the bulk of the shows are aimed at children aged 13 and under. For the older students we offer workshops based on a musical and Shakespeare. In this case the students are the protagonists and our actors the facilitators. The duration of this ‘show’ is around 2 hours. (It is not followed by an extra workshop.)
Q: When and where are the auditions?
A: Our auditions are usually held in London (other UK destinations are added if necessary) around Oct-Nov. Information and details regarding this are given directly to successful applicants. You must apply to be invited to audition. If you are unable to audition we do accept DVD or video cassette (EU compatible) applications and if necessary,You-Tube links.
Q: When do tours start and how long do they run for?
A: Tours run from October to December and January to the end of May/start of June. We will need three to six actors from October and up to 30 actors to start in January.
Q: Where in Italy does the tour take place?
A: Our tours run all over Italy. We collaborate with over 2000 Italian schools from the Dolomites to Sardinia and Sicily. You could be working anywhere!
